It’s winter, and my roof is leaking! What can I do?

When water infiltration is detected, it is imperative to act fast to prevent the problems from worsening and damaging the roof structure and siding. Re-roofing is possible in winter, but it often increases costs by about 20%. It’s why it is important to always inspect the condition of your roof before the cold season to prevent unpleasant surprises.

Why does a roof leak in winter?

Seepage may seem surprising in winter, but it is common when the weather turns warm and a layer of water forms on or under the ice. To be evacuated, this water will find its way to the vulnerable areas of your roof.

The most common causes

  • Eavestroughs that were not adequately cleaned in the fall blocked the water flow. In cold weather, stagnant water will form an ice dam which, when the weather warms up, will allow the water to rise and get under the shingles or the siding.
  • The damaged flashings create a weakness in the most sensitive areas of your roof, such as the seals of the accessories (chimneys and ventilators).
  • Your flat roof drain is clogged or cracked.
  • The insulation is defective.
  • Asphalt shingles are damaged, leaving bare spots or significant gaps.
  • Nails have been lifted.

Locate the location of the infiltration

When water is dripping inside, it is easier, visually, to trace the source of the problem. On the other hand, you will need to be alert to certain signs that will require greater vigilance. For example:

  • The ceiling is stained or has rings.
  • The attic insulation is damp.
  • The frame is blackened by mold.

What are your options?

In winter, working on a roof is more dangerous and delicate. It can be dangerous, and the materials are often more challenging to handle. It is, therefore, preferable to ask for the help of professionals who can identify, evaluate and proceed with the repair or the complete repair of your roof.

Temporary solutions* for certain types of infiltration

*The word “temporary” implies that the problem must be solved at the source as soon as the weather returns.

For ice dams:

  • Installer des câbles chauffants.
  • Remove snow from the roof regularly, not damaging the coating. It is recommended for a flat roof only. Contact a professional for a sloped roof.
  • In emergency mode – Create swales by pouring hot water at the base of the roof. This is preferable to using an axe to break up the ice.

For minor repairs such as caulking or joint filling:

  • There are products specifically designed to be applied in winter. Consult your roofer on this subject.
