Skylights and their problems

Skylights often have their share of problems. Among the most common issues encountered, two dominate the list:

Condensation inside the skylight box or on the skylight window

Condensation is usually caused by too much humidity inside the building and a lack of insulation. First, it is strongly recommended to ensure that the skylight frame is adequately insulated and that the glass, which generally contains an insulating gas, is still performing well. During your inspection, if you see that these two components are considered efficient, it would be important, at that time, to make sure that the humidity level inside the building is not too high. Another way to counter this problem is to install a barrier at the ceiling level that will prevent humid air from reaching the skylight components to avoid condensation. To do this, a plastic film with adhesive strips, sold in large renovation centers, can do the job well once installed. It is also possible to install a rigid and permanent device made of a fiberglass panel or custom-made glass.

Water infiltration from the base was caused by an ice dam built up under the bottom of the skylight at roof level.

It is essential to clear the snow that may have accumulated on the skylight glass because this snow will create an ice dam when melting. The heat loss from the skylight will melt the snow on top of it, which will freeze once it reaches the lowest part of the roof because this part is generally much colder since there is less heat loss at this location. So the ice dam that will be built up over time will be able to prevent the water from reaching the bottom of the slope. This water will be forced through the roofing system or under the skylight flashings, resulting in water infiltration inside the building. A simple way to do the snow removal is to take a specially designed shovel, sold in most large renovation centers, as it will allow you to work from the ground much more safely. You can also call a company that will do it for you!
