How an ice<\/h2>\n

dam forms The mechanism is more sneaky than it seems. It all starts with heat escaping from the house and warming the underside of the roof. The layer of snow in contact with the roof melts, even when it’s bitterly cold outside. The meltwater then flows down the slope.<\/p>\n

The problem is that the edge of the roof, the eaves, does not benefit from this heat. It overflows the heated structure, it remains freezing. When the meltwater reaches this cold zone, it freezes. Layer after layer, a bulge of ice builds up at the edge of the roof. This is the dam. Once it is there, the snow that continues to melt higher up comes up against it. The water accumulates behind, in a small pool that does not freeze, and looks for the slightest crack to pass through.<\/p>\n

Why your attic is the real culprit<\/h2>\n

We often blame snow, or cold, or simply the bad luck of winter. The real cause is elsewhere, just above your ceiling. An ice dam is almost always the symptom of a poorly ventilated and poorly insulated attic.<\/p>\n

When the ceiling insulation is insufficient, the heat from the house rises freely and heats the roof from below. When the attic ventilation is deficient, this heat remains trapped instead of being evacuated. As a result, the underside of the roof remains warm, the snow melts, and the dam cycle begins. A well-insulated and well-ventilated house keeps its roof cool and even, and the snow remains snow.<\/p>\n

In addition, there are air leaks. Around recessed light fixtures, the attic access hatch, poorly sealed joints, the warm and humid air from the house seeps into the attic. It heats the roof and deposits its moisture on the frame. Contrary to a tenacious belief, laying heating cables in the gutters does not solve any of this. It melts a canal in the ice, without touching the cause. The real remedy is in the attic, not on the gutter.<\/p>\n

The damage that an ice dam leaves behind<\/h2>\n

An ice dam is not just a matter of aesthetics. It is water damage that is waiting for its time.<\/p>\n

The water trapped behind the dike eventually seeps under the shingles, then into the attic, then into the walls and ceilings. It wets the insulation, which loses its effectiveness and takes weeks to dry. It leaves brown stains on the ceiling of the upper bedrooms. And most importantly, it installs moisture in an enclosed, dark space, the ideal environment for mold. These fungi attack the wood of the frame and contaminate the air you breathe.<\/p>\n

Weight is not to be neglected either. A large dam of ice weighs heavily and pulls on the gutters, unhooks them, twists the supports. The ice cubes that accompany it become dangerous when they drop above an entrance. Preventing an ice dam rather than de-icing<\/h2>\n

My advice can be summed up in one sentence: adjust ventilation and insulation before fighting the ice. A roofer who knows his trade will inspect your attic as much as your roof, because that’s where your winter is played out in the dark, in the darkness above your ceiling.<\/p>\n
